OK, full disclosure – I have never been to Turks & Caicos. But DeeAna has. In fact, DeeAna IS there right now. So since she sees fit to keep tormenting me via pictures and videos on social media, I decided to bring myself (and you) up to speed on what we’re missing.
Like many of the islands in the Bahamas, T&C is a British territory. In fact, it is the 3rd largest based on population. Located northeast of Cuba, the Caicos (larger) and Turks (smaller) islands combine for a total of 170 square miles and a population of roughly 35,000. Like so many of the islands in the Bahamas and Caribbean, T&C have a history filled with Spanish capture (Juan Ponce de Leon was the first Spaniard to document sighting of the islands), slavery, piracy, and commerce (cotton and sea salt).
Nowadays T&C is best known for white sand, blue seas, and vacation indulgence, tourism being the mainstay of the island chain. And with an average year round temperature in the mid 80s, that is little wonder. In fact hotels and restaurants now account for nearly 35% of their GDP. The US dollar is welcome, the people are friendly and warm, it is only a couple hours flight from many airports, and the resorts are breathtaking.
DeeAna is currently at The Shore Club located on the incredible Long Bay Beach – noted by Conde Nast as 1 of the top international beaches in the world. It has also just been named the #30 resort in the world, and the #1 resort in the Caribbean by Travel and Leisure. The Shore Club has 106 units – ranging from gorgeously appointed suites to luxurious villas, perfect for couples sneaking away or families vacationing in the sun.
While Shoreside is DeeAna’s current location, she is a T&C expert and can create a dream getaway for every budget! From villas with full kitchens to elaborate resorts, to boutique hotels to all inclusive properties like Beaches, to secluded private homes, she can work her magic for you.
Turks & Caicos is also well known as a celebrity go-to. Privacy, bluer than blue water, the laid back vibe, and the most gorgeous beaches in the world attract everyone from Brad Pitt to Katie Couric to Jennifer Garner to David and Victoria Beckham. Even Prince loved the area so much he had a mansion there which just sold for $11 million. Sports Illustrated has enjoyed the surreal beauty of T&C for their swimsuit issue in the past – 2016 being the latest time they took advantage of the breathtaking scenery. This trip has found her meeting (so far) the Honorable Edwin Astwood, Minister of Health, Agriculture and Human Services, as well as WWE veteran Rick Flair.
Wondering what the specialty food of T&C is? Take a look at this picture.
Those, my friends, are conch shells. And they are more than just those pretty shells you can hold to your ear or blow into and make noise. Walk into any restaurant in T&C and they are sure to have myriad selections involving this island staple. Conch fritters (a personal fave), sandwiches, conch served ceviche style – “cooked” in lime juice. Lobster and local fresh caught fish are sure to please, too.
And if laying in the sun all day is too laid back for you? There is no end to activities to keep you on the move. Kiteboarding, scuba diving, snorkling, horseback riding in the surf, or just exploring the islands and finding your own hidden piece of paradise – there is something for everyone.
Researching all of this and salivating over all of DeeAna’s pictures, I am convinced. Turks and Caicos is calling my name. Put the conch shell to your ear, I bet it’s calling yours, too.
